Australia needs more qualified chippies.

Carpentry is one of Australia's largest trades, with around 69,000 job openings expected over the next five years. Builders right across the country are crying out for qualified chippies who can frame, fit out and finish — on residential, commercial and industrial projects.

It's a recognised trade, it pays well, and it's the foundation for your own subbie business or a builder's licence later on.

Case Study.

Year 1

Got fully qualified as a carpenter.

Jake had spent three years working under his uncle as an apprentice on Sunshine Coast residential builds — solid on the tools, no ticket to show for it. His day-to-day site work was mapped against the units, and he finished the last few pieces online while staying on the tools.

Year 2

Stepped up to leading hand.

With the trade cert and the right paperwork sorted, Jake stepped off the apprentice rate and into a leading hand seat with a Brisbane residential builder. Small framing crew, two builds at a time, around $90K on a leading hand package — and enough spare bandwidth to start quoting weekend jobs of his own.

Year 3

Launched his own carpentry contracting business.

By year three Jake had registered his own carpentry contracting company, running three chippies as subbies to two local builders and turning over more than $200K. The trade cert also gave him the base to start working toward his own builder's licence next.

34 units. Your pace.

34 nationally recognised units delivered through structured on-the-job training and online theory. You have up to 34 months to complete, but most qualified chippies finish much faster through Skills Recognition for prior on-site carpentry experience.

How much time?

Apprenticeship or fast-tracked via RPL.

Already on the tools? RPL converts your on-site carpentry experience into a nationally recognised trade ticket — often in weeks, not years. Starting fresh? Combine paid apprenticeship work with structured theory, fully supported by our local Aussie team. Consistency beats intensity, and you're fully supported by our local Aussie team every step of the way.

Curriculum

Built around the way chippies actually frame jobs.

Setting out, flooring, wall and ceiling frames, roof trusses, formwork, eaves, cladding, doors and windows — plus WHS, levelling and working at heights. Every unit maps to a real task a carpenter runs day-to-day.
